Breathe 08:00
BREATHE It’s the trade winds that carry The highs and the lows It’s the raindrops falling That turn into snow It’s the snow that is melting On the ground where we walk It’s the rivers and streams That cut through the chalk And it’s the air that we breathe It’s the air that we breathe It’s the air that we breathe It’s the air that we breathe It’s the silt that settles For the fertile plains As the gathering river Flows into the bay It’s the ocean that follows The shift of the moon It’s the darkness that beckons From late afternoon And it’s the air that we breathe It’s the air that we breathe It’s the air that we breathe It’s the air that we breathe It’s the breeze that is building And carries the swell It’s the moisture that rises To fashion the clouds It’s the clouds that sit heavy Expectant to burst It’s the water they give us That quenches our thirst And it’s the air that we breathe It’s the air that we breathe It’s the air that we breathe It’s the air that we breathe © Copyright John Reed & Ali Karim 2021. Solitude 05:57
SOLITUDE The sun kisses the distant sea Darkness sets into our dreams The rising moon casts shadows till The morning dew bedecks the ghyll And the river flows and the river grows As it takes its path towards the sea And the waves they bear their heavy load To where the distant sea kisses the sun You shined a light Yet I was blind You showed a way I looked behind You opened gates I didn’t walk through The future now Is solitude The future now Is solitude The bustling of a market day Sends the silence on its way A gleaming sun divides the room Shapes in the dust dance to its tune Tiredness waives to another new day As the one from before disappears into space And I drag myself from my woebegone Battling a force that won’t let me alone You shined a light Yet I was blind You showed a way I looked behind You opened gates I didn’t walk through The future now Is solitude The future now Is solitude © Copyright John Reed & Ali Karim 2021. Vision 04:17
VISION I can see you now I can see you in the distance And then you seem to fade Looking through the raindrop And you seem to flicker away I can’t see you now See you now / I can’t see you now See you now / I can’t see you now I can see you now Through condensation happy faces On the window pane Looking through the breath And then you seem to flicker away I can’t see you now See you now / I can’t see you now See you now / I can’t see you now I can see you now I can see you in the mist And you give me a wave But the mist of getting thicker And your image seems to flicker away I can’t see you now See you now / I can’t see you now See you now / I can’t see you now I can see you now I can see you in the river As the weir begins to race I can see you in the river But I cannot see your face I can’t see you now See you now / I can’t see you now See you now / I can’t see you now © Copyright John Reed & Ali Karim 2021. Descent 04:00
DESCENT Where the path descends We just don’t know Where it comes to an end We just don’t know But it falls into the silvery mist And divides the things that still exist To the right, to the left the ruts persist Where the path descends Where the path descends We just don’t know Whether foe or friend We just don’t know But it clings to the hill for its own dear life As it twists and it battles its way to the light And the ascent is sharp and the bends are tight It will carry you like a bird in flight Where the path descends Where the path descends We just don’t know Where it comes to an end We just don’t know What the path intends We just don’t know What message it sends We just don’t know Truth or pretence We just don’t know Where the path descends © Copyright John Reed & Ali Karim 2021. Encounter 03:55
ENCOUNTER All I could see was the shadow of a tree And a man stood beside it looking straight into me Bright January light was piercing through I swear on my life that tree started to move And the man disappeared As the tree appeared nearer And in less than an instant With dark clouds collecting A quietness fell And with the temperature cooling The remaining light was inhaled Inside the tree I can’t just stay here / I just disappear I just feel so light / I can’t all the way try From rugged bark and creeping root A fragile creature in breeches and boots Slipped through the gloom like a pipistrelle bat And settled on high with the moon at its back And the creature disappeared As night turned to day And in less than an instant With dark clouds parting their way For the yawn of the sun And the delicate dew Glistened and shook And moistened the soil For new shoots to accompany The chorus of morning The tree breathed light once again And set the man free I can’t just stay here / I just disappear I just feel so light / I can’t all the way try © Copyright John Reed & Ali Karim 2021. Cycles 07:48
CYCLES The wind bends the stalks And the rain weighs them down The droplets of rain Fall down to the ground The ground swallows whole And the moisture sinks deep The roots and the stalks Cherish all they can keep. The insects are crawling And sucking the veins Of the outstretching leaves That are catching the rain For the prey of the birds As their camouflage breaks But they are far more in number Than the birds can take And the birds in the air Or on telegraph poles Watching the people In their houses and homes The people are shouting And some of them cry But the people who shout May be the first to take flight © Copyright John Reed & Ali Karim 2021. Time 05:29
TIME With my eyes I’m seeing you now With my ears I’m hearing you With my mind I understand you now With my life I hold you true You’re dancing through my thoughts again Burning fires inside my soul It’s like you’re really here and then You’re gone and I’m alone With my eyes I’m seeing you now With my ears I’m hearing you With my mind I understand you now With my life I hold you true You think the sands of time will cure That life and love will ease your pain That distance and light will calm you And that you will live again With my eyes I’m seeing you now With my ears I’m hearing you With my mind I understand you now With my life I hold you true © Copyright John Reed & Ali Karim 2021. about

BREATHE is a collaborative album from John Reed & Ali Karim. This is Folk Music with an Urban twist, Urban music with a dash of Folk, and an encounter with something that is both familiar, yet not. It is all in the eye of the beholder.

Our recording method was the same for each song: lyric sheets thrown into the air, with the set that landed nearest the camera being turned into a song that very day. There were no pre-planned tunes, ideas, concepts. Just the lyrics, and our skills and intuition.

"It's the air that we breathe..."
